Equipping: MIDI Controllers

After the computer and DAW, a class set of MIDI controllers should be the next thing to check off the list to equip a music lab. The best piece of advice I can offer is stay away from synthesizers! With today’s modern DAWs you don’t need them. They are more expensive than a dedicated MIDI controller with features and capabilities that you don’t need. Synthesizers are great for live performance when you need an instrument that can generate it’s own sounds. In the music tech lab, you need something to provide input to the DAW. Below are just a few suggestions that are on the lower end of the price range, but provide plenty of functionality for a lab.

Novation Launchpad

3 options ranging from $100 to $350. I have a class set of Launchpad Mini’s in my lab. Compact and highly customizable. Check out the videos on my YouTube channel to see how I use them.

AKAI MPK mini

25 key MIDI controller with 8 pads and 8 control knobs. Small keys, but a nice controller for around $100.

Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol

25 full size, semi-weighted keys to feel more like an actual piano. Pitch bend and modulation wheels are nice. No pads, but sturdy and well made. $170
